A visit to “Dnipro Gardens”

The ITС Project team in Ukraine together with the Zaporizhzhia Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a two-day training for entrepreneurs on the certification of production according to the international standard Global G.A.P.

After the first theoretical day, participants from Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions visited the apple farm “Dnipro Gardens” (Dnipropetrovsk region), which has the certificate Global G.A.P.

The “Dnipro Gardens” LLC was founded in 2016 and is known under the brand UApple. The company is one of the largest producers of apples in Ukraine. UApple brand has already been presented in local supermarket chains, as well as in the countries of the European Union, Asia and the Middle East.

“Dnipro Gardens” grow six sorts of apples: Gala Schniga, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Pinova, Fuji and Red Delicious. Each year orchard expands on 100 hectares.

The company’s manager, Olexandr Pakhno, told how their orchard was built and what main approaches to growing, storing and selling apples follow in the UApple team.

According to Olexandr, the whole orchard is covered with a special anti-hail net that protects it from hail and sunburn. The drop-watering system and pump station make it possible to provide watering and nutrition whenever it is necessary.

“24 hours the orchard is under on-line control of the FruitConsult company from Holland. Once a month a company’s consultant arrives to monitor the situation and give necessary advice to our agronomists”, says Olexandr Pakhno.

In the orchard, there is also American meteorological station from Davis company which makes possible to measure the temperature and humidity of air, soil and leaves to determine global changes, the amount of precipitation, wind direction, atmospheric pressure, quality of watering, dew point, etc.

Bees and other wild insects are treated with special care. It is well known that they help to increase pollination during the flowering period as well as fight the pests. That is why 20 special “hostels” known in Europe as “insect-houses” have been installed in the orchard Also, the presence in the garden of useful insects can reduce a load of pesticides on the environment.

The company uses special software that helps track harvesting, sorting and storing crops. “In fact, we know how and in what row each apple grows,” says chief agronomist Oleksandr Vyhovsky.

According to Olexandr Pakhno, “Dnipro Gardens” uses advanced storage technologies that allow the apples to be delivered to different countries all the year. Apples do not lose their freshness, taste and shape during transportation. The company exports to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, OAE and other countries. Representatives of the “Dnipro Gardens” are constantly taking part in specialized international trade shows and working on the expansion of markets.

The brand UApple is valued not only for its taste but also for its strict quality and safety requirements. That is why the UApple team decided to get Global G.A.P. certification.

They say, the certificate confirms the safety of the product and allows you to follow the history of the product: from the soil, where the orchard grows up to the apple on the supermarket shelf.
